How to stop bullying through suggestions that are backed by evidence?
Bullying is a social problem which can be prevented but far from being obliterated. It can come from different forms, may it be physical, verbal, etc. However, we still have many ways in order for it to be prevented. The following are action points for dealing with bullying:
Act of Solidarity
When it comes to bullying incidents that are in progress, stop it as soon as possible by making it clear that it will not be tolerated. Kids, involved or not, are able to do this, but adults must also take a stand.
Condemn the Behaviour
Reproving bullies won’t motivate them to change as most people don’t respond well to being mortified. Instead, it makes them angry, indignant, and resentful. To effectively act on how to stop bullying, help them learn how to distinguish the behaviour from the individual. That the behaviour of bullies is bad and will not be tolerated.
Psychiatric Conditions Screening
For serious behavioural problems, have your children screened for psychiatric conditions by specialists trained in handling such problems.
Some bullies may find it hard to feel empathy for others, especially when they are suffering from psychiatric problems, but many are still capable to empathise. Through empathy, they are motivated to change
Teach Moral Disengagement
Since bullies are able to harbour rationalisations and anti-social beliefs which makes it easier for them to act in callous ways, teaching them about moral disengagement will be a great help. It would be best to introduce it to kids as well as adult bystanders.
Re-interpret Hostile Intentions of Others
As suggested by research, aggressive kids can be helped by interpreting the hostile intentions of others in a different way. There are also training programs which make kids less likely to take offence if someone bonked into them and just take it as accidental.
Instruct Stress Management
Through results from research, there were techniques and relaxation therapies that were identified. Especially for bully-victims clinically with high levels of arousal, they can benefit from this.
Authoritative parenting is thought to be a manner of enforcing unthinking obedience featuring harsh or arbitrary punishments. However, in contrast, it’s a way of regulating the behaviour of kids especially in setting limits, on how they must respond, and treating them as rational, cooperative, and independent family members. Based on studies, if parents are involved, warm, and communicative, their kids are less likely to become bullies.
Push Family Counseling
Studies that were conducted suggest that having sessions that address on how to refine communication between members of the family may help in reforming kids who bully.
Bullying-Free at Home
Kids are more likely to develop anti-social personalities if they are exposed to abuse and other untoward life events. This is why it is necessary to protect kids from bullying at home.
